Rennie Gets His Due (interview)

by Steve Tilley, The Edmonton Sun, March 25, 2001

He's been compared to both James Dean and Brad Pitt, but Callum Keith Rennie is his own man, plain and simple. The Edmonton-raised actor has worked with nearly every Canadian director of note, from Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo) to David Cronenberg (eXistenZ), though he's probably best recognized for his role opposite Paul Gross on the Mountie-out-of-water dramedy Due South.

Rennie popped up on screen twice during last week's Local Heroes International Film Festival, appearing in Memento and co-starring with Molly Parker in Lynne Stopkewich's Suspicious River. We grabbed Rennie for a minute and subjected him to our 20 questions.

Hee! I have a feeling that the complete answer to 5. Do you have a pet peeve? is Yes, reporters asking me stupid questions. And he wanted to work with William Shatner???

Oh, Callum!

5. Do you have a pet peeve?
Yes.
13. Whom do you most admire?
Heroes.

I love when he does really short non-answers to interviewers' questions. Such a head-fucker! He did that a lot with the European interviewer asking about BSG, too.

6. What's your idea of the perfect Sunday?
Sex.

*volunteers* :-D

8. What was the worst job you ever had?
Extra.

Oh, perhaps he will be sympathetic when Vixen finally meets him!

I just hope I meet him on a perfect Sunday *g*

I've actually listened to that interview several times and haven't read it. But it sounds to me like he's well aware that interview questions are leading questions meant to draw him out, but he has no problem with just giving the one-word answer if he's not inspired. Like, "C'mon, give me something I feel like talking about. You'd better have something more interesting in the hopper. What's next?" :-D

[identity profile] callumvixen.livejournal.com 2008-03-05 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggles* This is priceless!

8. What was the worst job you ever had?
Extra.
Baahahahaha.

He can be just a jack-ass.... a very cute, very lovable jack-ass.

I'd seen a few of these somewhere else, but not all of them. TY for sharing!

4. What's your favourite hangout?
Europe.

Way to be specific, Callum. At least he didn't answer "golf course."

[identity profile] scriggle.livejournal.com 2008-03-05 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. If this interview had taken place a couple months later, then the answer would've been "golf course."

Oh, Callum, you snarky bastard. *hearts*

And yay, one I hadn't seen before. Coolness. :-)

Cool! I hadn't read all the questions before, I love his answers. ♥ But I was thinking, maybe he gave short responses like that because they'd only 'grabbed him for a minute' ? Think fast, Callum! *g*

16. Do you have a favourite quotation? If so, please share it.
"The punishment of the fool who pursues the better before securing the good."

Was wondering about this and found it came from George Bernard Shaw's play "Man and Superman" - in which Callum played in 1989. Sure took him some time to secure the good... Hope he keeps pursuing the better though.

5. Do you have a pet peeve? Yes.
Can't help loving this!

You just had to check it out, hm?
Can't help it! /n\

I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere but can no longer find it. So that makes us the only two people on the internet to know it. Plus whoever comes after.

What I can tell you is that he played "the goatherd". It's not possible I made this up, is it? I never even read the play!

And here is the extent of the goatherd's role:

On the hill, watching the road, is a man who is either a Spaniard or a Scotchman. Probably a Spaniard, since he wears the dress of a Spanish goatherd and seems at home in the Sierra Nevada, but very like a Scotchman for all that.

.../...

A whistle comes from the goatherd on the hill. He springs up and points excitedly forward along the road to the north.
THE GOATHERD. Automobile! Automobile! [He rushes down the hill and joins the rest, who all scramble to their feet].

Maybe we can make a post on Callum's plays?
With all the info available, it wouldn't be a long post...

I bet he was fabulous. (I also bet he was a Scotchman.)
I bet he was supposed to be a Spaniard but made it look like a Scotchman?

And yeah, a post about his plays... hm. Then again, maybe that's not a bad idea. It doesn't have to be a long post, after all.
My thoughts exactly, in the same order!

...want to do it?
Why not? could be fun.
Maybe add what quotes of him I can find about acting in plays. And that one available picture, or two :)

If it's okay with you, I can send you a mail when I'm about ready?

All right, sold! Will let you know.
And don't get too excited about the two pictures.
You know them!

Oh, and that icon of yours? Your idea of a goatherd?

RE: the quote

Did a word get dropped? Because, I've read it several times and it makes no sense.

And how in the hell do people mistake him for Ian Tracey? All Canadians don't look alike, you know! *g*

[identity profile] explorer0713.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like Ian Tracey has one of the most distinctive physical traits anywhere, geeze. If in doubt - look at the teeth.

"europe"?

oh, callum. (hee!)

Yay for the Leatherman!! Oh, to meet CKR in Europe on a Sunday. I would even eat licorice for him.

And what an intriguing quote, amidst all the noninformative quick answers.

Thank you for this!
