The smoking section must be sold out (article)

by Rita Zekas, Toronto Star, September 13, 2002

"CAN we go somewhere quiet?" the publicist asked?

Yeah, how about Pickering?

We settled for a patio table at Bistro 990 so Callum Keith Rennie could smoke.

Rennie was on his way to the screening of Claire's Hat, the renamed mockumentary about the making of Picture Claire, the contentious Bruce McDonald feature in which he co-stars and which is exiled to video store gulag.

It was McDonald's 1995 rockumentary Hard Core Logo that catapulted Rennie into mass consciousness. He played rock 'n' roll rebel Johnny Tallent and blew audiences away. Star Gazing and friend Grant were equally infatuated with Rennie.

"Do you realize that I am the only person in this theatre not wearing a black leather jacket?" asked Grant apprehensively, chafing in his Burberry trench.

Rennie could identify with Tallent. "He's one foot out the door holding on to his youth. Growing up at 17 when the punk movement started," Rennie recalled, "it was an aggressive and angry stance that I reacted to."

He grew up in Edmonton, "bizarre big sky country, where there are eccentric people trapped by the environment. I 'get' them in a different way than the Birkenstocks in Vancouver and the big city Toronto and its arrogance and fear."

We could only nod in agreement, distracted by Rennie's blue eyes, the exact shade of his shirt. Rennie drifted into acting at age 28.

"I didn't know what an agent was," he chuckled, "although I believed I was an actor. It's easy to say you're an actor when you're sitting around smoking cigarettes."

Rennie has been acting for a decade and divides his time between Vancouver and L.A., where he's working on his golf swing.

Between strokes, he shot the festival film Flower & Garnet.

"I don't know how to describe it without sounding cheese ball," he demurred. "My character is the heart of 'dadness.' It's about loss, a poem about family and what's beautiful about it. It's about a kid growing up alone; it's about how a family deals with loss. My character is buried alive with his (dead) wife and is scratching at the surface. I'm a distant dad.

"I'm very proud of it."

He's guesting in the series 11th Hour in an episode directed by David Wellington and would collaborate with McDonald again in a heartbeat.

"I'd like to shadow Bruce when he works."

I decided to post this just the way it was published, even though the 'Johnny Tallent' thing is a bit annoying.
Found here.

Claire's Hat FTW.

This is why we can't trust fangirls to gather reliable information...lol

I would've loved to hear an interview *after* he saw Claire's Hat... I'm sure his reaction would've been priceless.

Ty for sharing!

Maybe Bruce filmed the audience during the screening and decided to use that material later. combined with "I'd like to shadow Bruce when he works" make me dizzy in terms of movie perspective...

That would be me, totally distracted and unable to speak in his presence.

Hee! You got the golf tag!

But true fangirls would never ever make a mistake like "Johnny Tallent". We know the characters' names. *g*

Is it just me, or is this article badly written and incoherent?

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] cysefin an interview AFTER the screening would be awesome.

Well, she could be forgiven for that. I hate to think how bad my article would be.

:-) Yeah I love that one. It's an old one by [livejournal.com profile] skater_g8r.

I don't think I've ever read this one before. Interesting! I can almost forgive the dodgy writing because, well, she was distracted. Hehe.

Ah, that poor woman. She probably was too distracted to get everything straight and he did play Johnny and Billy at the same time. Partly wearing the same clothes even. It can be confusing.

Thanks.

Also thanks for putting the other articles up here on which I didn't comment, because I suck like that. Well, actually I didn't want to fall even farther behind.

I also need to save some time to stalk your personal journal! Haven't been there in weeks. *kicks real life*

But yeah, thanks for the work you put into this.

I know it's a bit much to post one per day but... well. :)

Other probably love it. I actually like it, too. I know there is something waiting for me at the end of the day. It just makes me feel a bit bad because I sometimes don't comment and thank for putting it up, if I don't have anything other to say about the article.

There are at least two more parts of the Roadshow. I am looking forward to read them. Hopefully this weekend.

Hehe. Thanks. It is not really an icon yet. My plan is to force [livejournal.com profile] napalm_isis to draw me a flying turtle and then have this part (maybe even in a prettified version) switch to the flying turtle. Isis refuses to watch the DS final, though. Everytime she comes close she gets another family member hooked and has to start watching all over again. She hates me. ;)
