One example:
I, or my wife bought, the box set. I did not see all the episodes of the first season, and wanted to catch up on the back ground of the show. I liked 'Wendigo' and found the second show much like the first 'Pilot'. The first two episodes the actors were creating a feel or chemistry between the two brothers; by the fourth show the two lead character's created the full chemistry for the series. Wendigo episode portrays Dean as smart a**, and Sam as independent thinker. The best part of the show is the banter between Dean and the hunting guide. The Wendigo creature and the tunnels provide the catalyst for a creepy background. Movie quality supporting actors, sets, writing, and directing gives the viewer a movie quality TV show. I Love the music and Wendigo is fun to watch. 8 out of 10.

Quotes:
  • Roy: You're rangers?
    Dean Winchester: That's right.
Haley Collins: And you're hiking out in biker boots and jeans?
Dean Winchester: Oh sweetheart, I don't do shorts.
Roy: What, you think this is funny? It’s dangerous backcountry out there, her brother might be hurt.
Dean: Believe me, I know how dangerous this could get. We just wanna help her find her brother, that’s all.

  • Dean Winchester: So, Roy, you said you've done a little hunting?
Roy: Yeah, more than a little.
Dean Winchester: Uh huh. What kind of furry critters do you hunt?
    Roy: Mostly buck, sometimes bear.
Dean Winchester: Tell me, Bambi or Yogi ever hunt you back?

  • Roy: I’m gonna take a look around.
Sam: You shouldn’t go off by yourself.
Roy: That’s sweet…don’t worry about me.

  • Roy: Kid don’t worry, whatever’s out there, I think I can handle it.

Sam: It’s not me I’m worried about, if you shoot this thing you’re just gonna make it mad. We have to leave now.

Roy: One you’re talking nonsense, two you’re in no position to give anybody orders.

  • Sam: We never should have let you come out here in the first place, alright? I’m trying to protect you.

Roy: You protect me? I was hunting these woods when your mommy was still kissing you goodnight.

Sam: Yeah? It’s a damn near perfect hunter. It’s smarter than you, and it’s gonna hunt you down and eat you alive unless we get your stupid sorry ass out of here.

Roy: {Laughs} You know you’re crazy right?

Trivia:
  • In the beginning two guys are playing a first person shooter video game against each other and one claiming the other is cheating. A reference to the pilot of Threat Matrix. Executive producer John Shiban was a writer for Threat Matrix.

  • The book one of the boys is reading in the beginning, was reading "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. In this book Campbell's unique perspectives examine the world's complex and interwoven mythology, folklore and religion, providing an understanding of the essence and genesis of humanness. Eric Kripke has confirmed more than once that his writing is influenced by the Hero's Journey.

  • Sam's deceased girlfriend's full name is Jessica Lee Moore as seen on her tombstone in this episode.

  • A "Northern Indian Tribe" is referenced not only in the episode but by the writers and Eric Kripke as one of the sources for the Wendigo legend. This tribe is actually the Ojibwe of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and lower Canada. The name comes from the Ojibwe word "Wiindigo" (pronounced WEEN-di-GO). Many traditional members of the tribe believe the creature to actually exist in the woods and at times put out offerings of tobacco or food to appease it.

Interesting scenes:

  • When the old guy tells the brothers his story.

  • Introduction of Roy. Telling everyone how dangerous this journey will be. And already showing his sensitive side.

  • All the witty back and forth talking between the brothers and Roy.

Does he die?
You really want to know? Are you sure? Really sure? Well, then. (highlight to read)

::Yes, he dies. Killed by - drumroll, surprise, surprise - the Wendigo. :D::

Articles/interviews

Not much really.

2 Reviews that at least mention Callum here and here.

Extract from the first link: Again, a strong set of original characters is key to success: Callum Keith Rennie (BSG) rocks as a should-have-listened-to-them expert who would be the save-the-day hero in any other show, and Gina Holden kicks serious po-po as an orphaned sister as fiercely determined to save her brother as Sam and Dean are to save one another, once the Wendigo pudu hits the fan.

Extract from the second link: The guest stars in this episode did solid if unmemorable work. Gina Holden as Hailey did pretty much what she was supposed to; look really good in shorts. Callum Keith Rennie is perfectly unlikable as he was supposed to be as the tracker and guide known only as Roy. And Hailey’s brother Ben, played by Alden Caleb Ehrenreich, was a completely unnecessary and useless character that added nothing to episode. He had like four lines, and none of them were important. All the rest of the guests in this episode were there to either walk through and/or die quickly, which they did a fine job of.

Links

Not much, really. His character got an entry on the Supernaturalwiki-Website here.

And you can watch the episode on Youtube, if you want. First part can be found here.

Availability

First season of Supernatural is available through amazon as well as many other online sale sites.

I enjoy this typical monster-of-the-week episode very much. Although I guess it has a lot to do with Gina Holden and Callum, because they both give great performances, which adds more depth to this episode than one might suppose. Plus - Callum has a gun to play with. ♥

While camping in Blackwater Ridge...

You forgot to mention here that it was a rally lame episode. I mean. Uhm. Yeah.

And, hee, you found a comment at IMDB that actually mentions Wendigo. And Callum. Kind of. Nice. And, wow, is this 'portrays Dean as smart a**' an IMDB thing or... uh, does it just really not speak for the commenter?

When the old guy tells the brothers his story.

Which is actually Doc Cottle from Battlestar Galactica. Don't tell me you don't watch BSG. Uhm. If not? You have to start NOW. /helpful

Wow, Callum has an entry at the Supernatural Wiki? These people are thorough.

Isn't it always like that with callum. Well, maybe not in the Smallville thing. Yeah.

Sooo. Beautiful post! \c/

And, I just HAVE to say this.

being that hibernates for twenty-three years

You know, I also think that it's important to note that 23 is a prime number. Did you know that there are some species that only appear intermittently and hibernate for the rest of the time? The logic there is that the prime number intervals between emergences makes it difficult for predators to evolve that could specialize as predators this species. JUST SAYING.

Ignore that part, please.

Oh, and I don't have permission to fill out the polls? LJ glitch or some thing with your account?

Yeah, and it's like this biiig character entry with lots of information. *rollseyes*

Yeah, well. I mean, honest. It's not that big a character. I mean, apart from being Callum, you know?

Glad you liked the primary number thing. *g*

Re: your polls. That happened before. You can try to make a test poll on your own LJ. And if that one works, just delete the poll from this post, and put up another, with just the polls. Are you sober? JUST ASKING. Just say 'no'- or you have to develop this theory :-)

I am! And I was! It's... okay. So, predators do hibernate too, some of them at least, right? And for the pray a prime number hibernation period just takes care of the fact that as long as the predators don't have exactly the same hibernation period (from now on called 'hp') and starting point? Very small chances to see each other ever. And even if they do, like, if the predator's hp is the least common multiple of the prey's hp, it reduces the chances of them meeting each other often quite a lot. So, no sense in specializing in hunting a kind of prey if it's never around. You know?

I actually found a link (a not very helpful one though), See (http://prola.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v93/i9/e098107)?

Just wish Callum'd played the Wendigo and eaten them all, ha!

Callum Keith Rennie (BSG) rocks as a should-have-listened-to-them expert who would be the save-the-day hero in any other show
yes, please!

Does cuddling with the Wendigo count?
I'd be much interested to find the answer to that :)

Great job!
